Stinky Rabbit.

Hey.

I bought yesterday frozen rabbit, so I had to cut it by myself.
When I was doin' that rabbit was a bit... OK, was really stinky.
Especially guts.! Uff...

Meat smells less, but it's really characteristic smell.

So here's my question.

Is it normal.? I mean it was my first time cuttin rabbit, and the odor was awfull.
I don't kno if to buy minced rabbit or just get used to smell.

I have never cut a rabbit myself .
But I do remove the intestines of mice and then the smell is also really nasty.
Sometimes it smells so bad that you could almost throw up :???:
So I guess that it would be the same for the guts of a rabbit.
I'm afraid that you would have to get used to the smell and open the windows for fresh air ;)

I googled yesterday the same topic, and I found complitely diff answers, some r sayin it's just normal, and it depends what rabbit was eating before.
But when I asked the same question bout rabbit on Polish forum they, some of the ppl said they never had experience with stinky rabbit. They were cuttin rabbit but it didn't stink.

:?: Well everything looks fine with it. I removed guts - stomach and intestines. Left the rest.

And wanna ask bout if to throw it or leave it.;p :?:

It was my very first time with bunny, I think I never even ate that, So have no idea bout smell.

If you buy a commercial frozen bunny they'll stink as hell. The ferrets and cats don't seem to bother and eat it well.
I always lett it defrost a bit, just enough to be able to cut and degut the whole stuff outside the house. Stomach, gut, bladder...all in one frozen go to the garbage bin (bagged first because of the flies ;) )

I really think it's because they freeze them withouth getting the gut empty on forehand. We used to breed and slaughter our own rabbits and never had that problem, or with any other animal. Either we had them fasting before killing or we removed the gut before freezing. Maybe that's what they do in Poland as well?

Nanja is a really good place to buy your meat! I think no one gets away of her shop without a chat and some laughter :D
Besides that, she really knows her stuff and can give you a lot of help with switching to raw food.

She also has rabbit pieces, like shoulders, backs or chest. These don't smell at all...so if your furries liked the rabbit, you can choose that ones next time ;) If you give some heart and liver/organ mix with it, you have a complete meal.

For sure, I'll buy bunny in diffrent form. :P
My kitchen looks like someone would fight there with that bunny - lot of fur, blood, poop, and pieces of guts.!
Just will never buy it again whole bunny. :P

Freya - loves bunny, and it's one of the best meat for ferrets, right. What I remember it's light, not so much fat, not so much o cholesterol and it's great source of energy. So luckly My little monster likes it. :D

Naja's place is the number 1, I am sure.
I buy already for years all my animal food by Prooidier, for the ferrets but also meat for my dogs, it's super ! Good informations too ! And a nice girl ! ;)

I never cut rabbit by myself, mice I sometimes cut to put medicines in it because a ferret didn't want eat waltham, so you try everything else to give medicines.
I can understand it is a very stinky work, better buy it in parts ! It's very good food for ferrets, nice they eat it !

I hope there will not be visit somebody your home when it is rabbit-preparing time..... ;) :brush:

Well I'm cuttin mouses on pieces, cause Freya when I don't do that, she's eatin just let's say half of the mouse and the rest she's leavin for the 'hard times'. When it's in pieces she's eatin most of the times everythin. And i'm givin her medium sized mouses, which suppose to easy it them whole at once. :?:

Our experience is that most of the times they eat the head first and leave the rest for the moment they are really hungry.

It is funny (but also good) to hear that she is eating everything at once when you cut the mice in pieces. We have never tried something like that.

For Droopy, Nannouc and Sanne I also cut mices in peaces, by the way, I use a knife to open them a little bit, then they eat it immediatly. And it's easy to stop medicines into a mice, so I did it for Droopy.
Goliath eat also only the heads.....the rest he left for myself, but I say no thanks, eat it yourself ! :???:
